Boreas Leadership Program

Meeting the world’s environmental challenges demands effective leadership. The Institute on the Environment’s Boreas Leadership Program provides University of Minnesota graduate and professional students and postdoctoral fellows with skills needed to be active, effective environmental leaders, prepared to catalyze solutions to environmental and social challenges.

Drawing on expertise from across the University, Boreas connects participants with environmental leaders in many sectors and enhances leadership skills in three areas: communications and media, integrative leadership, and systems thinking. The program also offers valuable professional networking opportunities for students.

Boreas Leadership Program Focus Areas

  • Communications and Media
Boreas communications and media workshops help participants meet the challenge of communicating complex environmental issues.

  • Integrative Leadership
This workshop empowers participants to work across diverse and sometimes conflicting disciplines and interests to effectively address environmental problems.

  • Systems Thinking and Tools
The systems thinking and tools section develops participants’ ability to deconstruct, describe, and address environmental problems using systems tools.
