29 men were killed in Appalachia’s coal country when an errant spark ignited the methane leak in the Upper Big Branch mine in 2010. Overburden tells the story of two women whose lives are deeply affected in the aftermath of this explosion and how they unite to take down a powerful coal company in America. In the words of the director, Overburden aims “to spark conversation that can move beyond the expected and polarizing debates and allow viewers to access an empathetic view of a people and a place that few Americans truly understand.”
