Institute Affiliates

The Institute on the Environment is currently inviting nominations for new Fellows and Affiliates as part of its commitment to bring together innovators from across the University and beyond to solve complex environmental challenges.

Faculty fellows have been essential members of the IonE community since it began and have helped establish IonE as one of the premier environmental institutes in the country. The current affiliates program has offerings for early-career faculty, visiting scholars, sustainability educators and established interdisciplinary scholars. Nominations are invited from all University of Minnesota campuses.

Nominations for 2018 IonE Affiliates will open in late summer. Check back here for dates and submission information.

Individuals may formally affiliate with IonE in one of four categories:

IonE Fellows

IonE Fellows are senior researchers and thought-leaders that form the intellectual foundation of IonE.

IonE Educators

IonE Educators focus on the development of new curriculum.

IonE Associates

IonE Associates are early career scholars interested in developing capacity in interdisciplinary engagement.

IonE Visiting Scholars

IonE Visiting Scholars are external researchers who are pursuing scholarship in residence.

Benefits of affiliation include eligibility for IonE grants and matching research support, access to IonE support services, and the use of IonE facilities for research and meetings. In return, affiliates are expected to contribute to the IonE community through participation in events and other collaborative and interdisciplinary activities.

Affiliates participate in an annual scholarly meeting and, this year, all affiliates are invited to join in the celebration of the institute’s 10 year anniversary on Nov. 16.

The application/nomination deadline is September 18, 2017. Nomination instructions can be found in the Affiliates Program overview (PDF). Nomination materials should be sent to, compiled into a single PDF file. Selection of new affiliates is overseen by the IonE Faculty Leadership Council. Offers of affiliation will be made by late October.
