River Life
River Life is a multi-collegiate program hosted by the Institute on the Environment. The program strengthens the connections among the University of Minnesota, the Mississippi River, and the communities and organizations along the river that are working to establish a sustainable urban riverfront.
With the goal of developing sustainable relationships between healthy rivers and healthy communities, River Life draws on case studies from across the globe, identifying best practices in research, place-based art and public education, and several professional fields such as urban design, planning, and landscape architecture.
As the largest educational institution on the Mississippi, the U of M is uniquely positioned to model stewardship activities and lead river-oriented research, education and outreach. To that end, River Life works closely with partners including:
- Mississippi National River and Recreation Area
- Saint Paul on the Mississippi Design Center
- Minnesota Historical Society's Mill City Museum
Within the U of M, River Life is a collaboration among the following programs:
- Institute on the Environment
- Institute for Advanced Study
- Urban Studies Program
- Department of Landscape Architecture
- Water Resources Center
River Life seeks collaborations in which U of M teaching and research can provide tangible benefits to off-campus partners. E-mail Pat Nunnally, program coordinator, for more information.
