Event Engagement & Sustainable Resources

Partnerships and engagements are central to the Institute on the Environment’s mission in leading the way toward a future in which people and the environment prosper together. To foster this, IonE partners on events with other University of Minnesota units in a variety of ways:

Are you looking to expand your event’s reach? The Institute on the Environment can help get the word out on your event by sharing on our public facing UMN-wide calendar

  • Submission Form Request
Requests are reviewed once a week and therefore, promotional requests should come in at least 3-4 weeks prior to the event. In order to be added to the monthly IonE Connection, submissions should be made 2-3 weeks prior to the coming month.

Sustainable Event Resources

Interested in making your events more sustainable, but not sure where to start?

The Institute on the Environment works to build a place where people and planet prosper together, including cultivating an engaged campus community interested in hosting low to zero waste events. Our sustainable event resources offer internal University of Minnesota units, colleges, departments, and groups an opportunity to create a low to zero waste event through guided expertise. This resource page is intended as a springboard for University entities to utilize zero waste initiatives for their future sustainable events on campus.

Event considerations

  • Venue: Check if the event venue has onsite organics / composting bins
    • If the venue does not have organics, request bins from UMN Recycling
    • Even if the venue has composting bins, check to see if adding additional bins would be worthwhile to not overfill current building composting bins.
  • Caterer: Check if your caterer uses compostable cups, plates, utensils, etc
  • Swag: Consider how your handouts could be compostable, recyclable, or reusable
  • Signage: Prepare signage to be placed on the food and beverage tables noting this is a sustainable event and that serviceware is compostable

Event Day – On-site Coordination

  • Bin Placement: Ensure composting bins are close to the food and beverage areas
  • Signage: Place near food to promote and remind attendees of sustainable event
  • Communicate:
    • At the start, remind attendees of the composting bin.
    • At the end, thank attendees for supporting a sustainable event
  • Monitor: During the event, allocate a staff member to monitor the organics bin (optional)

Communications: Along with other event information, include information about how you made your event more sustainable with their help. To help others create sustainable events, refer to IonE’s sustainable event resources page.
