Wellbeing: Expanding the Definition of Progress

March 22, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

The U.S. healthcare system is fundamentally an illness treatment system and unlike other nations, rarely incorporates aspects of positive health and wellbeing into clinical practice. Wellbeing is a set of measures and research constructs but also provides a perspective and a vision for an holistic approach to positive health. There is growing interest in a wellbeing movement in parts of the U.S. and developing recognition of the importance of positive health metrics and research as a way to transform the default U.S. healthcare system. Dr. Plough’s presentation will discuss both the national and international context of wellbeing research with a focus on developing evidence to improve policy and practices.

In this webinar, you will learn:
1) The role of wellbeing in promoting health equity
2) International examples of wellbeing in policy
3) The role of wellbeing metrics in improving population health

Alonzo Plough joined the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as chief science officer and vice president, Research-Evaluation-Learning in January 2014. He is responsible for aligning all of the Foundation’s work with the best evidence from research and practice and incorporating program evaluations into organizational learning. He also oversees the two grantmaking portfolios focused on innovation and emerging issues: Pioneer and Global Ideas for U.S. solutions. Plough has been a national leader in public health practice for over 25 years. Plough earned his PhD and MA at Cornell University, and his MPH at Yale University School of Medicine’s Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. He is currently clinical professor of health services at the University of Washington School of Public Health in Seattle. He has been the recipient of numerous awards for public service and leadership and is the author of an extensive body of scholarly articles, books, and book chapters.
