Hog and Dairy Farm ID Research Assistant ($15.91/hr, undergraduate job code, job ID 361563)

The Food System Supply-chain Sustainability team at the Institute on the Environment has positions for up to two part-time undergraduate students for the 2024 summer. The students will support the interdisciplinary project team focused on the USDA funded project titled “Stakeholder-engaged modeling, data science, and machine learning for more resilient and sustainable animal protein food systems”.

The students will collectively assist with: providing literature reviews, online research, image collection, organization, and identification. Activities for this position will include online research and literature review about hog and dairy manure management types, aerial image identification of the different manure management systems, the creation of a guide book and training dataset outlining the various dairy and hog  manure management systems across the US. 

The goal of this work is to create a training dataset of images for different dairy and hog manure management systems that the project team will use for creating a machine learning program that can identify all dairy and hog manure systems across the US. This is part of the larger goals of the USDA project. This position will directly report to the IonE project co-investigator, but will be sharing their work with multiple senior researchers working on this project
