From Invisible to Actionable
Most of the environmental impacts of our food and beverages occur in the crop and animal stages of production, but this supply chain is effectively invisible, making it difficult for the private sector to collaborate on sustainable agricultural improvements. FoodS3 is a continually improving platform that pulls together various data sources and models to make these supply chains more visible. The result is a link between the upstream companies and the downstream landscape, tying together the supply chain and its environmental impacts and empowering organizations to make more sustainable choices.

Connecting Supply Chains and Landscape Sustainability Impacts
Most of the environmental impacts of our food and beverages occur in the crop and animal stages of production, but this supply chain is effectively invisible, making it difficult for the private sector to collaborate on sustainable agricultural improvements.
To make agricultural supply chains more visible, the FoodS3 platform pulls together various data sources and models to simulate the movement of crops and livestock, connecting counties of production to counties of consumption. The platform models the distribution of crops from where they are grown to where they are used and includes the entire supply and demand of each crop. FoodS3 also models the processing of those crops into components of animal feed and moves the animals from their farms and ranches to primary processing.
The result is a link between the upstream companies and the downstream landscape, tying together the supply chain and its environmental impacts and empowering organizations to improve the sustainability of their supply chains.
FoodS3 is a continually improving platform that relies on partnerships outside of academia to guide research questions and ensure that the platform provides data and insights that empower community groups, environmental organizations, governments and companies to aggregate their impact through supply chains. The project also prioritizes open-source science to encourage collaboration and accelerate progress.
