How does environmental progress actually happen? IonE’s Theory of Change shows how we connect people, ideas and action to move solutions into practice.
From the Ground Up
IonE’s Theory of Change grows from a clear premise: that when the right conditions exist, transformative, systems-level change becomes possible. Explore what these conditions are and the ways we cultivate them into meaningful impact.
Fertile Ground
Every initiative IonE supports draws on a shared foundation – the expertise, resources and infrastructure that go into making ambitious, interdisciplinary work possible. These aren't background conditions; they’re what allow the work to begin.
IonE convenes a community of researchers, educators, communicators and practitioners spanning disciplines, sectors and geographies. That breadth is what makes systems-level thinking and cross-cutting solutions possible.
IonE’s spaces on the University of Minnesota campus are designed for connection – meeting rooms and gathering spaces where researchers, students and partners can work alongside one another. Where we work shapes how we build relationships – and strong relationships are central to our theory of change.
IonE attracts and deploys funding to advance outcomes-oriented work across its network, from small, exploratory seed grants to large-scale funded projects. The ability to both draw resources in and direct them outward is what makes IonE an effective catalyst for collaboration and impact.
Behind every project and program is a set of systems, processes and people that make the work run – from grants management to human resources, finance and administration. Operational excellence is what allows IonE’s support to scale and its community to trust that commitments will be kept.
IonE’s digital infrastructure – from its website and content platforms to data tools and communication systems – connects its community and amplifies its work. These platforms are part of how ideas move, how partners find each other and how IonE’s outputs reach a broader audience who can put them to use.
Intention in Action
This is where IonE’s foundation becomes active – through research that generates new knowledge, programs that build and connect communities and communications that move ideas into the world. These activities are interdisciplinary by design, partner-engaged by commitment and oriented throughout toward outcomes that matter beyond the institution.
IonE supports partner-engaged, outcomes-oriented research that crosses disciplinary lines and connects University expertise to real-world sustainability challenges. Projects are designed to generate findings and produce knowledge that partners and communities can act on.
IonE creates structured opportunities for researchers, practitioners, educators and community members to find each other, build relationships and seed collaborations that wouldn’t otherwise happen. Convening, with neutrality, across sectors and disciplines is one of IonE’s most distinctive contributions to the sustainability ecosystem.
From undergraduate experiential learning to professional development across all ages and career stages, IonE builds sustainability knowledge and leadership capacity at scale. Cohort-based programs and innovative pedagogy are hallmarks of this work.
Stories shape what people believe is possible – and sustainability progress depends on getting those stories right. Through storytelling, publications and content , IonE works to ensure that sustainability insights reach the people positioned to act on them and contribute to a broader narrative that makes transformative change imaginable.
IonE tracks outcomes and celebrates progress as a way of amplifying what’s working – so others can learn from and build on it. Reporting is part of how IonE contributes to a broader culture of evidence and impact in sustainability work.
Into the World
The work IonE supports generates things that travel – evidence-based solutions that communities and decision-makers can act on, people who are more skilled and connected than before and stories and ideas that move at scale.
IonE-supported research produces evidence-based answers to sustainability challenges. These are frameworks, findings and forward-looking approaches that communities, organizations and decision-makers can put into practice. The measure of success is not publication but application – and in how this work shapes what’s yet to come.
Through its research, learning and network-building programs, IonE contributes to a growing community of people who are more knowledgeable, more skilled and more connected than before. These are the individuals who carry sustainability work forward – in their institutions, their communities and their fields.
IonE works to ensure that sustainability innovations and insights don't stay within academic or institutional walls. Through communications, convenings and partnerships, ideas become accessible – reaching people who can act on them, adapt them and spread them further.
Taking Flight
The outcomes IonE works toward are larger than any single institution can produce. They emerge when solutions are adopted at scale, when people are genuinely equipped and inspired to act and when the systems that shape our relationship with the natural world begin to shift. IonE cultivates toward these outcomes – and trusts the ecosystem to carry them forward.
The research, learning approaches and tools IonE supports are designed to travel: to be adopted, adapted and implemented by communities, organizations and governments working on sustainability across Minnesota and beyond. Scale is the measure.
When people are skilled, connected and inspired – locally, regionally and globally – they drive progress in ways that no single institution can orchestrate. IonE’s work contributes to the conditions that make this possible.
The deepest outcome IonE works toward is transformation – a future where the systems that shape our societies are equitable, just and sustainable, and where people and planet can prosper together. It’s the vision we orient toward every day.
