Speaking Science was created to help University of Minnesota faculty, staff and graduate students strengthen their science communication skills and build connections across disciplines and roles. Since its founding in 2018, it has grown from an annual conference into an expanded, ongoing SciComm platform.

Throughout the year, Speaking Science builds on the momentum of its flagship conference through events, workshops, trainings and shared resources that sustain learning and connection over time.
Speaking Science is a cross-campus collaboration supported by the Institute on the Environment, the College of Biological Sciences, the Bell Museum and other University and external partners. The initiative supports a growing University community dedicated to science communication that serves the public good.

IonE’s Role in Speaking Science
As a co-founder of Speaking Science, IonE continues to help shape the initiative as part of the institute’s broader role as a convener, connector and developer of distinctive learning opportunities at the University. Through this work, IonE supports a cross-campus community of practice focused on stronger communication and exchange across disciplines.
This work also reflects IonE’s commitment to public-interest communication and the role effective communication and storytelling can play in connecting research with real-world change.
I can’t think of anything more humbling – and important – than being part of this effort to connect what’s happening within the University to the broader world, and vice versa, through authentic storytelling and meaningful dialogue.
