Planetary Health

Human health and the health of the planet are inseparable

Can people truly be healthy on an unhealthy planet?

The short answer is no – but the full answer is both more complicated and more actionable. Planetary health is the study of how the natural systems that sustain life on Earth directly shape human health outcomes, from food security and air and water quality, to infectious disease, mental health and more. IonE-affiliated experts work across disciplines to understand those connections and develop approaches that treat people and planet as an integrated whole.

University-Wide Strength

UMN is home to multiple centers and partnerships focusing on Planetary Health. Here are two.

Center for Planetary Health and Environmental Justice

Based at the School of Nursing, the Center for Planetary Health and Environmental Justice is a cross-sector hub advancing just, regenerative and community-rooted approaches to health that foster remembrance of our interdependent relationship with all life on earth. The Center works alongside communities, educators, policymakers and practitioners to address the social, ecological and economic conditions shaping health and disease.
