Symposium Context

In 2011, the Sustainability Symposium arose from a recognition that pressing environmental issues, such as climate change and environmental injustice, require the collective expertise of diverse disciplines. At a large institution like the University of Minnesota, connecting across the campus can be a real challenge. Now, more than ever, we need to collaborate with each other across academic, social, and cultural backgrounds to confront some of the biggest challenges humanity has ever faced.

At the Sustainability Symposium, we aim to bridge the gap in our understanding of what constitutes sustainability knowledge and action. We aim to bring together students, community leaders, practitioners, and scholars to communicate, share and collaborate over ideas needed to address the most pressing problems of today. These problems include environmental injustice towards minoritized communities across race, economics, and gender, food scarcity, diminishing biodiversity, and climate change.
