Science on Deck
Every summer, the Large Lakes Observatory hosts Science On Deck events, offering free public tours and presentations on the research vessel (R/V) Blue Heron. The Blue Heron is part of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS), and is chartered by research scientists to explore the Great Lakes.

The public can hear a presentation from the Large Lakes Observatory’s Craig Hill at 1:30 p.m. Tours are guided and detailed from the research vessel crew, with the opportunity to interact with graduate students working on freshwater research.
About LLO
Located on the Duluth campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth, LLO is the only institute in the country dedicated to the study of large lakes throughout the world. They focus on the global implications of investigations in the areas of aquatic chemistry, circular dynamics, geochemistry, acoustic remote sensing, plankton dynamics, sedimentology and paleoclimatology.
The Large Lakes Observatory serves as a basis for assessing human impact on large-lake ecosystems, and for developing sound policy for protecting these invaluable bodies of freshwater as our global environment evolves.
