Background & Expertise
Emily Schilling earned her PhD in ecology and environmental science from the University of Maine. She spent 10 years as an associate professor at Augsburg University, teaching ecology and environmental science and mentoring undergraduate students in her freshwater research. Her work addresses the natural functioning of lentic freshwater systems and their responses to human stressors, most recently focusing on dragonflies in these ecosystems. She investigates dragonfly migration and the impacts of climate change on their phenology and distribution. In 2023, she became the associate director of the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories at the University of Minnesota. Schilling provides administrative and programmatic leadership for the station. She leads the field biology course program, shaping curriculum and student experience, and she leads station outreach efforts with the state park and works with university and community stakeholders to enhance research opportunities, student experiences and regional connections for the station.
