John A. Downing is a nationally recognized freshwater scientist, strategic leader and institution-builder whose work has shaped how we understand, protect, and innovate around lakes and inland waters. As Director of Minnesota Sea Grant at the University of Minnesota Duluth, he connects cutting-edge research with real-world impact—advancing science, strengthening communities and building Minnesota’s blue economy. Downing also serves as a professor in the Department of Biology within the Swenson College of Science and Engineering, as well as a researcher for the Large Lakes Observatory.

A prolific scholar and sought-after collaborator, Downing’s research has transformed global understanding of lake productivity, carbon cycling and the outsized role small lakes play in climate processes. His work spans continents, influences policy and bridges disciplines—from ecology and engineering to data science and workforce development.

Beyond scholarship, he is an entrepreneurial force. Downing forges partnerships among federal agencies, industry, Tribal nations, nonprofits and local communities to turn Lake Superior and Minnesota’s 10,000+ lakes into platforms for innovation, education and economic growth. He champions experiential learning, youth engagement and public outreach—believing that science is strongest when it is shared.
