Background & Expertise

Peter K. Kang is an associate professor and the Gibson Chair of Hydrogeology in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on the physics of flow and reactive transport in porous and fractured media, integrating theory, high-performance simulations, microfluidic experiments, and fieldwork to understand coupled processes across scales from pore to field. Kang’s research investigates the fundamental aspects of fluid flow and its interaction with biogeochemical processes in environmental porous and fractured media, with direct implications for groundwater management, carbon sequestration and mineralization, bioremediation and critical mineral extraction. He earned his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has been recognized with awards such as the InterPore Award for Porous Media Research and an NSF CAREER Award. His group’s interdisciplinary research addresses fundamental fluid-rock interactions, solute mixing, and biogeochemical processes in heterogeneous systems, with relevance to water resources, energy, and climate challenges. Kang also teaches courses in hydrogeology, fractured rock systems and subsurface carbon storage.
