Background & Expertise

Shailey Prasad, MD, MPH, is executive director of the Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility at the University of Minnesota and serves as associate vice president for Global and Rural Health and vice chair for education in the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health. A physician–scholar whose work bridges medicine, public health, environment and community systems, Dr. Prasad advances interdisciplinary approaches to health equity that connect local and global challenges. 

Dr. Prasad’s career spans clinical care, research, education and institutional leadership. His work focuses on strengthening primary care systems, developing equitable global partnerships, and preparing health professionals to address complex challenges shaped by climate change, migration, rural health disparities, and social determinants of health. He has collaborated with communities ranging from forest tribal populations in southern India to rural and underserved populations across Minnesota and the United States. 

At the Institute on the Environment and across the University, Dr. Prasad fosters collaborations linking health sciences, environmental research, policy and community engagement. He has established interdisciplinary training initiatives and long-standing university partnerships throughout Africa, Asia and South America, helping build sustainable research and education programs that prepare future leaders to address interconnected environmental and health challenges worldwide.
