Background & Expertise

Timothy M. Smith, PhD, is a professor and co-director of the Sustainable Systems Management Program at the University of Minnesota. Throughout his career, Smith has pioneered hybrid and streamlined approaches for measuring and improving sustainability systems performance. Smith’s research and consulting practices have attracted more than $50 million in support from governmental agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and corporations, with much of this work resulting in user-enabled analytics platforms facilitating supply chain, investment and policy decision-making. His research has been published in a broad array of top-tier scholarly journals, including the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science, Nature Sustainability, Environmental Science & Technology and the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. He has served on the faculty at INCAE Business School in Costa Rica (2007–17) and held the rotating chair in sustainable entrepreneurship at Wageningen University, Netherlands (2011). Smith has also served as an advisor to the EPA Guidelines for environmental performance standards and ecolabels, the General Services Administration (GSA) Greening the Federal Government Roundtable, the EPA/ANSI collaborative on sustainable product standards, and the National Research Council's Committee on certification of sustainable products and services. Smith is also CEO and managing partner of TASA Analytics, a data and analytics firm helping corporate and non-profit clients implement decarbonization strategies.
