Background & Expertise
Cody Sheik, PhD, is an associate professor of biology at the Large Lakes Observatory and serves as a board member of the International Association for Great Lakes Research. Prior to joining the faculty at University of Minnesota Duluth, he graduated with a PhD in microbiology from the University of Oklahoma and was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Michigan. He is also a Kavli fellow. His work holistically studies the microbiology of water and sediments in freshwater systems, both large and small.

Assessing Emerging Cyanobacterial Threats to Lake Superior
Challenge
Lake Superior is one of the fastest warming lakes on Earth, despite its size, and its chemistry is influenced by increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, which has led to an increase in its alkalinity. This combination of physical and chemical changes will likely influence the biological landscape and physiology of phytoplankton communities by altering the preferred growth conditions of individual species.
