Dan Keefe

Background & Expertise

Dan Keefe is a professor of computer science and engineering and Distinguished University Teaching Professor at the University of Minnesota. He holds a PhD in computer science from Brown University and is also an artist with training at the Rhode Island School of Design and School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Keefe's research on interactive data visualization and virtual reality partners across disciplines to address challenges in science, engineering, design, medicine and Indigenous cultural revitalization. His computing research is published primarily in ACM and IEEE venues, where he and his students and collaborators have been recognized with multiple awards; his creative work has also been featured in exhibits in both local and international venues. He received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2010, and his name appears on the University of Minnesota's Scholars Walk honoring the intellectual accomplishments of faculty. Keefe has served in a variety of editorial and organizational roles within the international research community. He received the IEEE Service Award in 2015 and is a senior member of the IEEE, member of the ACM, member of the UMN Academy of Distinguished Teachers, and fellow at the Institute on the Environment.
