Background & Expertise
David Beard is professor of rhetoric at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He has published in the International Journal of Listening; Philosophy & Rhetoric; the Southern Communication Journal and Enculturation, among other venues. With Richard Enos, he co-edited “Advances in the History of Rhetoric” (Parlor Press). With Heather Graves, he co-edited “The Rhetoric of Oil” (Routledge). With Katy Chapman, he co-edited “The Power of One: Theories, Strategies and Case Studies in Internationalizing the Student Experience” (University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing). He is a fellow with the Institute on the Environment, affiliate faculty in the Religious Studies program, and graduate faculty in the master of professional studies. He has served as a board member with the University of Minnesota Extension Regional Sustainable Development Program. He loves comics, art and "Doctor Who," with a particular fascination with the ways that the show is about death.

Challenge
Some rural Minnesotans experience feeling too remote from economic, social and political power to be able to take environmental action. To address this, there is a need for materials which demonstrably improve a sense of collective and individual agency and that develop that sense of agency through the lens of environmental justice.
