Background & Expertise

Jennifer Schmitt is a senior research scientist in sustainable food systems at the Institute on the Environment. She co-leads research and development for the Food System Supply-Chain Sustainability (FoodS³) platform that traces environmental impacts through U.S. agricultural supply-chains and works with industries and companies to help them understand their supply-chain environmental impacts. Schmitt also leads research focused on sustainable food system transitions, most often focused on understanding systems of food recovery and food waste. Through all her projects, Schmitt’s focus is on external partnerships, teamwork and impact. She has a PhD in conservation biology and a MS in applied economics from the University of Minnesota as well as a BS in ecology, evolution & behavioral biology and international relations from Beloit College.
