Lee Penn is a chemist who believes that understanding the molecular scale is key to protecting our macroscopic world. A professor in the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, their research group investigates how nanoparticles behave within environmental systems and develops methods for green materials synthesis. Their work resides at the intersections of geochemistry, materials science and analytical chemistry, with particular focus on the synthesis, characterization and environmental behavior of nanoparticles. Beyond the lab, Penn is a committed educator and mentor, and has taught classes ranging from general chemistry to nanotechnology to the use of bicycles for transportation. Penn's scholarly pursuits are guided by a fundamental commitment to sustainability, and they strive to be a good relative to the water, the earth and the communities that depend on them.

The transport of pollutants and other waste into watersheds impacts both public health and the environment.
