Biochar; life cycle assessment; wood construction materials
Background & Expertise
Matt Aro is a research program manager for the Materials and Bioeconomy Research Group at the Natural Resources Research Institute. His main areas of interest are developing and applying new materials for infrastructure and construction, biochar-based building materials, new wood coatings and treatments, composites and life cycle assessment.
Featured Project: Matthew Aro
Biochar-Based Bricks to Reduce Carbon Intensity of the Built Environment
Challenge
Even though buildings contribute 37 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, the majority of efforts to reduce their impacts have focused on reducing operational carbon emissions from heating, cooling and lighting, while solutions for reducing embodied carbon of the building materials themselves are lacking. The production of building materials is often the cause of intense consumption of natural resources and energy, so improving sustainability is one of the greatest challenges in the construction industry.
