Background & Expertise
Nathaniel Springer's research intersects the fields of economics, industrial ecology and sustainability science. His work is centered upon exploring sustainability tradeoffs in supply networks and industrial ecosystems using industrial ecology methods, with a detailed focus upon the agricultural, food, and energy sectors. Research topics have included assessing global sustainability of future diets and agricultural technologies, modeling footprints in sub-national food and agriculture supply networks, and assessing local to global sustainability tradeoffs across food and energy systems. Springer holds a PhD in ecological economics and a master's in ecological economics, values and policy from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Before joining the Institute on the Environment, he worked at the Agricultural Sustainability Institute at the University of California, Davis and the Department of Bioproducts and Bioengineering at the University of Minnesota.
